Mike is originally from Clayton, California but spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Beijing, China where he attended the International School of Beijing. While there, Mike was a devoted multisport varsity athlete, and went on to compete collegiality in track and swimming. His athletic background fostered an interest in understanding how to optimize physical fitness and well-being in himself and others, and after receiving an Associate of Science degree in Fitness Training from Diablo Valley College, Mike transferred to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology.
Mike is also a NASM Certified Personal Trainer & Corrective Exercise Specialist, NSCA Strength and Conditioning Coach, USA Weightlifting Level 1 Sports Performance Coach, Russian Kettlebell Certified Level 1 Instructor, and has worked as both a personal and group trainer for many years.
His recent massage certification is the latest addition to his excellent skill set.
He now runs Empower Movement & Performance.
Clay has lived in San Luis Obispo for over 30 years, and has been practicing massage therapy for over 6 of them. Empower Movement & Massage was founded by Clay in 2017, and born out of a strong desire to serve and help others.
After massage school the education continued with orthopedic, oncology, Active Release Technique, and Functional Training Systems certifications. The goal being to provide safe, and effective bodywork for every unique individual.
Getting to know and meet people is a favorite pastime. Clay also leads a very active life when not providing massage & bodywork to the Central Coast family. Olympic weight-lifting, kettlebell training, and trail running to name a few.
Clay's desire is not only to help those who need it through massage, but introduce the full range of movement/health the human body is capable of achieving. He has received his certification as a Strongfirst instructor. His focus is building a foundational strength in his clients and athletes.
